Street Maintenance Worker
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Upon immediate supervision, to perform semi skilled work in connection with the maintenance and construction of roads and other City facilities.
Acceptable Experience and Training
- Any combination equivalent to completion of the tenth grade and one year experience in road or other construction work.
- A valid Iowa Class B CDL allowing the operation of vehicles with airbrakes is required.
NOTE: If you possess an out-of-state license, you must submit a certified driving record by the application deadline.
Required Special Qualifications
Special Note: Civil Service employees who are currently employed in this classification and wish to transfer or who previously held this position and wish to take a voluntary demotion should notify the Human Resources Office of their interest prior to the application deadline.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
Under immediate supervision, to perform semi-skilled work in connection with the maintenance and construction of roads and other City facilities. Rake asphalt material to provide an even thickness. Tamp and finish asphalt used in street repair and construction. Pave holes in streets with hot asphalt. Apply proper heat and pressure to obtain a smooth, resistant surface. Run a small roller over asphalt patches. Spread and tamp gravel. Assist skilled workers in a variety of construction tasks. Operate simple pneumatic tools. Patch and repair street holes. Load and unload trucks. Sand and salt streets during winter months. Remove snow from streets and sidewalks. Cut brush cleared from right of way. Assist in digging and resetting manhole covers.
