Distinguishing Features of the Class
This is responsible technical work in the Police Property Management Section receiving incoming property and evidence for the Des Moines Police Department. Work involves receiving, handling, and maintaining evidence and other Police property; maintaining a chain of custody; overseeing the disposal of evidence; and notifying vehicle owners of vehicle impoundment. Assist with the procurement of supplies and the maintenance of equipment and uniforms.

Acceptable Experience and Training
- Associate degree in a criminal justice, law enforcement or other related field; and
- At least three (3) years of experience in office administration, records management, or maintaining property and evidence; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license.
- Must obtain NCIC certification during first year of employment and maintain throughout employment as a Police Property & Evidence Specialist.
- Must pass a post-employment offer physical examination, drug screen, background check and polygraph exam.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
- Administers the intake, classification, inventory, storage, and release of confiscated, recovered, or found property and evidence;
- Prepares evidence for City, State, and Federal authorities and court procedures;
- Ensures physical security of property within the Police Property Management Section;
- Receives and releases property for the Police Property Management Section;
- Transfers and transports property and evidence;
- Handles disposal of items;
- Utilizes property evidence databases;
- Issues clothing and equipment to police personnel;
- Assists in managing the impound motor vehicle program; ;
- Orders supplies and equipment;
- Answers phones, assists customers and officers with related talks;
- Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
