Distinguishing Features of the Class

The Equity Liaison will serve as the primary resource for research, assessments, training, and continuous organizational development efforts for various City of Des Moines departments to advance and promote equity. This position will serve as a resource to assigned departments to support their efforts in normalizing, organizing and operationalizing equity. This includes research on promising practices, facilitation and training, one-on-one consultation and coaching, and ongoing support for continuous improvement. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Equity Officer, but leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement, initiative, and creativity.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Bachelor's degree in cross cultural or international studies, human rights, public administration, or related field; and
  • Some (1 year) professional experience coordinating partnerships among multiple groups in areas of equity and inclusion; AND
  • Some (1 year) experience delivering training or learning opportunities; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications

  • A candidate will be required to successfully pass a post-offer drug screen and physical examination.
  • Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License or equivalent mobility.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Provide ongoing learning opportunities to staff through trainings, webinars, facilitated dialogues, and other forms of learning;
  • Serve as the primary advisor to department leadership on efforts to advance and promote equity and inclusion;
  • Model the use of equity strategies and tools to evaluate programs policies and practices so that City staff and key community partners can improve service delivery;
  • Monitor and recommend continuous improvement to ensure workplace culture is welcoming and inclusive;
  • Provide regular updates via reports and presentations to City staff and leadership, community and elected officials;
  • Conduct research on best practices in other communities and agencies with similar functions;
  • Facilitate and support in maintaining healthy relationship between respective departments and with community groups;
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to program activities;
  • Develop mechanisms to assist residents in understanding public issues and technical requirements of City decision-making;
  • Support Equity Office in its core functions as needed; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
